Shamrock Vet Clinic

Appointment Policy

  • Our appointment book is computerized which allows us to efficiently make appointments for you and your pet. Our receptionists and team will attempt to accommodate all requests to the best of our abilities. Emergencies will be given priority over regularly scheduled appointments. We appreciate your understanding should you need to wait or be rescheduled due a unforeseen emergency appointment for another patient.

Emergencies & Urgent Care

  • Emergencies are accepted any time or clinic is open. We have trained veterinarians and personnel on duty 6 days a week. If you feel you have an emergency with your pet, please call us, if possible, prior to coming to the hospital. A staff member will then be able to advise you how to best proceed.

  • We are also available for urgent care when the condition is not life-threatening. If you feel your pet needs to be seen before you are able to get an appointment, our veterinarians will work to fit you in between scheduled appointments. When you arrive, our receptionists will be able to give you an estimate on how long you may have to wait in order to be seen. One of our technologists will be involved in the triage of your pet. If considered in the best interest of your pet, you may be asked to consider to drop off your pet with us at the hospital, so treatment can be started in a timely fashion.

After-hours Emergencies

  • Should you need emergency care when our clinic is closed, calling our regular number will connect you with an answering service and the veterinarian-on-call will be paged. The veterinarian will tell you how to proceed with the emergency appointment and which hospital to take your pet to.
  • Do NOT come to the clinic prior to getting in touch with the veterinarian on call and, please, keep your phone line free, so the veterinarian will be able to return your call.
  • If possible, please bring any medications your pet is currently receiving with you to the appointment.

  • Shamrock Animal Hospital is part of the Comox Valley On-Call Group. Clients of Shamrock Animal Hospital will be able to access 24 hours emergency care in either Comox or Courtenay, and will not be referred to the Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital in Nanaimo without first being able to access primary care locally. Many conditions can be dealt with locally, and further referral is most often not necessary. Patients requiring intensive care and constant supervision outside regular hours may need to be referred to a facility that has a veterinarian present day and night.
