Glaucoma is increased pressure in the eye. In advanced cases, glaucoma can be very painful and lead to removal of the eye. Glaucoma screening, done by a procedure known as tonometry, is a relatively simple and quick test and can be performed on most patients without much stress. A drop of local anesthetic is placed into each eye of your companion, and in the time that it takes for the freezing to work, the instrument to be used, called a ‘tonopen', is prepared. The tonopen looks like a big white pen, and it works by measuring the resistance or pressure that is met when air is blown against the cornea of the eye.
The testing is usually performed by one of our AHT's, and each eye will be tested a minimum of 2-3 times. The veterinarian will interpret the results and will determine if further testing or treatment is needed.
